The Rector of the Polytechnic University of Lisbon is the institution’s highest executive body and official representative. The current Rector is António da Cruz Belo, elected for the 2025–2029 term.
The Rector leads Polytechnic University of Lisbon’s institutional strategy and chairs the Management Board, the Permanent Council and the Academic Council.
The Rector is elected by the General Council by secret ballot, under the terms established in the Polytechnic University of Lisbon statutes.
The following may be elected Rector of Polytechnic University of Lisbon:
- professors and researchers from Polytechnic University of Lisbon or from other higher education or research institutions, in Portugal or abroad
- individuals of recognised merit and relevant professional experience
The Rector’s term of office lasts four years and may be renewed once.
The Rector is supported by up to two Vice-Rectors. They are appointed by the Rector and may be external to the institution.
The Rector may also appoint and dismiss Vice-Rectors for specific projects or areas, and their terms end when the Rector’s own term ends.
